Griffiths Memorial Centre

Our current building was first constructed in the early 1930’s by Jack and Grace Griffiths who came to Canada and the Black Diamond area from Wales. It was a small building built on ground level which served as their residence and later a small restaurant. They also owned the adjacent lot (now a parking lot) on which stood a motor vehicles registry office and post office where Jack was the postmaster from 1943 until 1950, when he retired.

The current building was later renovated to include a basement and was converted into a rooming house. Both Jack and Grace were active members in the community and served on many charity groups raising funds and donating their free time to helping others.

After Jack’s death in 1965, the building was donated to the local craft club and seniors’ club where locals gathered and took part in a variety of recreational and social activities. In February 1967, the club was officially registered as a non-profit organization, in the name of The Griffiths Memorial Centre Association as a memorial to Jack Griffiths.

Since then, the Griffiths Centre, as it is more commonly known, has undergone several renovations, additions, and improvements to make it more inclusive and to serve the senior members of Black Diamond and the surrounding areas in a variety of both recreational and social activities. Some of the current activities at the Centre include a regular breakfast program, theme dinners, floor curling, choir singing, quilting, exercises, cards, and dessert nights.

The Centre is also rented out for other events such as parties, seminars, meetings, displays, receptions, and private functions. It also contains an Alberta Health Certified fully equipped kitchen.

Membership is available to anyone over the age of 50.

February, 2017 marked the 50th anniversary of the Centre.

At the Griffiths Centre we provide programs and activities for seniors in the community to meet their recreational, health and social needs.  The Griffiths Centre is also known as the Griffiths Memorial Community Centre and the Griffiths Senior Centre.
